European Coatings Show 2019 Nuremberg

Eppstein. The specialist for pigment preparations will again have a stand at the world's leading trade fair for the paint and coatings industry in Hall 7, Booth 7-240. The innovation Arichemie will showcase are water- based pigment preparation developed for direct and indirect food contact applications. Further new developments being presented are the isothiazolinone-free preservation of Vocaflex-EN and the MIT- free preservation of the Vocaflex-LF series.

Arichemie will present Vocafil-FC and Vocafil-FD, the new pigment preparation series for food contact applications. The migration of substances in food-related applications is a technical problem that has become increasingly complex in recent years. The aim of the new product development was to take into account the most important regulations of the BfR (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung – German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) and the FDA in connection with the Regulation (EU) 10/2011 on Plastic Materials, the so-called PIM list (Plastic Implementation Measure) and Annex 10 of the Swiss Ordinance. Vocafil-FC only uses pigments and additives that are suitable for food contact. The Vocafil-FD series meets the same food contact requirements but is based exclusively on FDA-approved pigments (Colorants for Polymers). At present, 23 Colour Indices of organic and inorganic pigments are available as well as low PAH carbon blacks.

The food packaging industry is particularly affected by the migration of substances into the product to be packaged when there is direct or indirect food contact. Foodwatch has detected for example carcinogenic substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), adhesives and plasticizers in food having been introduced via packaging materials. The printing ink industry is looking for solutions to create the best possible conditions for food packaging. This means that, as far as possible, only raw materials approved under food law should be taken into account when formulating printing inks. The binder-containing, water-based Vocateint-FC and Vocateint-FD pigment preparations were developed bearing this requirement in mind. The product series was structured analogously to the Vocafil-FC and Vocafil-FD systems. The additives and pigments used in Vocateint-FC are suitable for direct and indirect food contact according to the EU regulations. This suitability includes the so-called PIM list (10/2011) and the EUPiA criteria. In addition, the additives and pigments used comply with the Swiss Printing Inks Ordinance as they contain only A-listed raw materials. Vocateint-FD  meets the regulatory requirement relating to FDA-approved pigments. A basic paste system of organic pigments is available.

CIT/MIT-free preservation of Vocaflex-LF

Vocaflex-LF is a water-based pigment preparation which is mainly used in in-plant and POS tinting. With the modification to a MIT-free preservation already on 1 January 2019, Arichemie adapted the preservation of Vocaflex-LF to the "Blauer Engel" RAL-UZ 102 and the EU Ecolabel requirements as well as to the CLP reclassification of MIT (Methylisothiazolinone) applicable in May 2020. The tried and tested good dry-film protection remains unchanged. While the combination of preservatives used was not extended, its dosage was adapted in order to leave the technical properties of the application as unchanged as possible.

In addition to the adapted preservation, Arichemie also offers a special Vocaflex-LF line which is particularly suitable for

applications in the high pH range due to its wetting and dispersing agent combination. This series includes all important inorganic pigments for architectural paints. The outstanding feature of these pigment preparations is their colour and alkali stability.

Isothiazolinone-free preservation of Vocaflex-EN

Vocaflex-EN is a water-based pigment preparation for colouring water-soluble coatings and paints that comply with the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC and EN 71-3, 7 and 9. The raw materials for Vocaflex-EN have been selected according to today’s state of the art, choosing the best possible pigments, additives and preservatives available. Since November 2017, EN 71-7:2013 for finger paints has set even stricter requirements regarding preservation. Arichemie aims at keeping the development of the Vocaflex-EN series in line with the requirements of the Toys Directive. The isothiazolinone- free formulations comply with the stricter limits for end-use applications intended for children under 36 months of age. This refers specifically to aqueous, liquid toy materials.
The series includes a wide range of organic and inorganic pigments as well as carbon blacks for applications according to category 1 AfPS GS 2014:01 and REACH Annex XVII No. 50.

Resin-based pigment preparations

Vocaplast-UV
The UV curing pigment preparations of the Vocaplast-UV series are based on a multifunctional oligomer – a free-radical curing system. They are mainly used for wood and parquet coatings, as well as for printing inks. The selection of the carrier resin in traditional UV curing largely depends on the application field. Therefore, in addition to the standard product, application-specific carrier resins, monomers or reactive diluents featuring corresponding functionalities are used upon customer request.

Vocaplast-L
Vocaplast-L is based on linseed oil, a renewable raw material. The series is characterized by oxime-free additives and is considered to be low in VOCs and solvents, respectively. The outstanding transparency in wood stains and the wide range of colours are particularly noteworthy.

Aricolor-N
Aricolor-N is based on a castor oil with a low, specified water content. The castor oil used complies with FDA food contact requirements. The pigment preparation is suitable for colouring 2K-PU foamed or cast polyurethane parts and for colouring "green" paints such as wood oils.

Heliocolor-W
The series is based on phthalate-free or phthalate containing plasticisers. It is suitable for the colouring of PVC plastisol, MMA or ABS, just to mention the most important application systems. Helicolor-W consists of a wide variety of organic and inorganic pigments. RAL colours and colour adjustments are covered by the basic paste system.
